2017, beech trees (fagus sylvatica), substratum, wood, aluminium, steel, anti-burgler spikes, 280 x 220 x 220 cm
'non grata', 2017 is based on an English gazebo and sheds light on the complex relationships between nature, the politics of public space and cultural identity. The floral-looking, but sharp-edged elements of the pavilion, consist of so-called 'anti-burglar spikes', which are commonly attached to garden walls in London to prevent unwanted intruders.
The gazebo houses a collection beech trees. Beech is the dominant tree species in Switzerland and characterises the landscape of the midlands. It bears a history of migration. Originally an invasive species it is destined to translocate due to climate change and give way to ever-green oak trees.
